- Before providing a linguistic analysis of Runglish, it is worth noting that in Russia, English was equated with the varieties of inner circles, mainly American and British Englishes. So until the 1970’s, Russian language educators devoted much time and energy to study inner circle varieties of English (Canadian, Australian, New Zealand English). More attention was later given to Outer Circle Englishes, especially those spoken in Africa and Asia. Research on the expanding circle varieties is relatively recent and is driven by political and economic motivations. It was only recently that Russian researchers started paying attention to the new emerging Runglish (Lazaretnaya, 2012).
- When English is “nativised” (That is, when it starts acquiring features of a local tongue), it acquires features in all dimensions. Usually, the native speakers of a certain language will not notice the way they, themselves, use English as they will introduce to it features from their mother tongue, with which they are already acquainted. This makes changes occur faster.
- The term Runglish was popularised in the year 2000 by Russian astronaut Sergei Krikalyov, who was abroad the International Space station. Other words such as russlish, Russian English or Russia English are also used to refer to this variety.
- The features are cited from Lazaretnaya (2012).
